I got a pretty newb question since i am an newb to surfing.... anyway heres my delema (if thats how u spell it) i bought a really cheap board of my friend for 30 buks its pretty old, its also a short board with one fin... and everyone tells me that surfing one fin on a short board is tough and since i havent gone b4 i was wondering if you can add fins (probably 2 to make it 3 obviously...) and if you can how much would it cost. Thanks in advance.

Wouldn't bother - if you've never surfed, an old single fin shortboard is about the worst choice of board you could have :?

Go surfing on a beginner-friendly hired board a couple of times, and see what you think of surfing (if you dont love it, then begone and never come back)

But for the record - it is possible to add fin boxes to boards (Im assuming the single fin is glassed on, if its an old board? ) but you'd probably need to get it done professionally, and while it wouldnt be all that expensive, its probably not worth it for a cheap old board.

Yeah rent a wide thick board for a while. You got a smoken deal on that board!!! about your dilema, yes single finners are hard to learn on but so can thrusters too(especially if they are too small for you), they generate much power through the fins and this would leave you drinking lots of salt water. A single fin funboard or longboard is good to learn on for sure! You shouldnt hack up the mono fin, put it away until ready to surf it. They have a knarly feel to them that you have to appreciate

you could sell it to me for 35 and then you'd make 5 bucks-----

--or, you could learn to ride a single fin the right way. go look at rob machado.
