Im currently a 3rd year product design student. I have been considering designing something that would allow the surfer to have a drink whilst in the water. Having had this problem myself when out in the water, resulting in cramps and ultimatly having to get out.
Any suggestions regarding the design or extra features would be really appreciated.

yeah, camelbacks are sweet for hiking and skiing-although im not sure how they would do in the water, but sure would leave a funny tan!

Imagine trying to pop-up with a couple of kilos of water on your back!
How about a de-salinating and purifying straw so you can sip straight from the ocean?

they have some pretty small ones used for running and such, don't really feel them, like 1 to .5 litres

"Only" a couple of kilos on my back - still dont want that as I pop up on a steep face
Think how much difference a not-quite-fitting wetsuit full of water makes - and that cant be more than a litre or so.
