Bought a used board and I'm guessing since it's already a bit of a beater, my first few sessions may have resulted in this crack along the stringer. I'm new to the sport and while I'm having a lot of fun learning words like stringer and ding repair, I'm a novice at this and am wondering how bad of a problem this is.

The guy who sold it to me said he does his own repairs and would be happy to show me now to fix it which is nice, I'm just wondering if this sort of crack will become a recurring issue? Is the board already compromised? Help!

I haven't ever had that type of ding but assume you can fix it well enough for your purposes. If you continue surfing this will be just one of many boards you will have. But depending on the type of foam it will absorb water and needs to be dried out and in all dings it is important to remove and replace any damaged foam if you want a long lasting fix.

Thanks for the sagely advice, it's in the shop now and they're going to take care of it over the next few days. I feel silly for not seeing the wear and tear before but now my eyes are really open for the next board I buy.

Hey! A crack on the stringer is pretty common with used boards, especially when they've been through a few sessions. Usually, if the crack isn't too big, you can repair it, and it shouldn't cause issues in the future. However, keep an eye on it, because if it spreads, it could become a problem. It's great that the seller wants to show you how to fix it – that's a good learning opportunity. After the repair, check if the crack is sealed well and keep an eye on it after a few sessions. A crack along the stringer isn’t the worst thing, especially on a used board. If it’s not huge, a decent repair should hold up fine. It’s awesome the seller’s willing to show you how to fix it, great chance to learn some ding repair skills.
