Taking surfboard abroad

Hello.
I'm off out to Australia in February and want to buy a new surfboard while I'm out there and bring it back on the plane as part of my luggage.
I remember reading something somewhere that as long as you check the board in before hand you don't need to pay extra.
Is this true?
Does anyone have any advice?
Thanks
Tim
