Surfboard repair series : 1 The Fin box ding
The following is for a PU board, substitute in epoxy resin for epoxy boards
Supplies:
- Stanley knife
Masking tape
Sandpaper (80/180/240/320/400)
Polyester resin
Wax in styrene
Cabosil/Qcell
New fin box
4oz fibreglass
Squeegee
Brush
Optional supplies:
Router
Fin box jig
Fin angle finder
1. Remove damaged box and/or fibreglass and prep area with 80 grit
2. Mix Cabosil into polyester resin and catalyse then place in area and set new box in, use a fin to match the angle to the other side, then tape in place and leave to set
3. Next day remove fin and fill in any voids with more cabosil mix if needed
4. Tape over fin box entry and cut 2 4oz fibreglass sheets to go over and laminate with a squeegee
5. Sand back edges and sand open box
6. Tape off box again and mix wax in styrene with resin to create sanding resin and brush over area
7. Knock down edges with 180 grit and work through 240, 320, 400 grits to achieve a smooth finish
8. Go surf !
Optional steps:
If damage severe you may want to fill the hole with foam and use the reroute method (jig and router needed)
Continue with wet sanding 600, 800, 1000 then polish if your board has a polish finish
