Snapped leash but not snapped

Postby Geezer » Fri Mar 25, 2022 3:40 pm

I was out in decent waves a couple of days ago and wiped out on a wave and felt a sharp tug on my leash then nothing. I quickly swam to retrieve my board before the next wave came thru since I was sure if snapped my leash. Reached down and felt the cuff in my ankle but as expected, nothing connecting to it. So I went in, changed boards and got another leash from my car and threw the snapped leash in the back. Waves were good so Inrushed this and didn’t bother to look at the break until I remembered the next day. On inspection, I found that the leash was not broken but had somehow managed to pop free with the screw still in place. Screw was still centered as well. So I unscrewed the bolt, put the leash back together and stewed the bolt back in place. Leash seems fine and was ok today when I surfed with it.

Anyone ever see something like this?

I have never seen anything like that. Is it magnatized?
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

From what I remember from Da Kine leashes, the hole in the swivel that the grub screw goes into is not threaded. So it's strange that the screw is still situated in the center. ( granted, I haven't owned that new type cuff, so maybe it is now currently threaded )

I would think if it pulled thru / out of the urethane molding, it would've left a scar or tear.

So I was out today and since that thing above happened I have a thing now where I periodically lift my ankle while sitting I the board and run my fingers over the swivel to check that everything is good. I do a visual now before and after each time out, paranoid about whatever it was that happened happening again. Well today in the lineup I felt the screw sticking out quite a bit….so I took the next wave in and belly rode it in to the beach after surfing the wave so as not to put any test on the leash. On inspection the screw somehow had made its way almost all the way out of the linkage. It sure what is goi g on but not so keen on these particular leashes anymore.
