Surfing Waves

Hi,

Recently moved on from doing solarez repairs to proper qcell/fibreglass/resin jobs. I read up a bunch online about the steps involved so think I did everything properly.... However these are starting to crack around the edges, see pic. The cracks started as just a black line in the q cell layer visible under the fibreglass, but now have worked thru the fibreglass too so I can feel them with my fingernails.

Can someone please advise:
1. What I might have done wrong so I can avoid in future?
2. What's the best way to fix the existing cracks, do I need to cut the whole repair out and start again?

I’m not sure but you could describe step by step what you did to assist us. My guess without that is you didn’t remove the damaged fiberglass along the crack or maybe sanded through the fiberglass you laid down

1) What ounce fiberglass ?
2) How many layer of fiberglass ?
3) How far past the Qcell filler did you make the over lap ?

Thank you both and unfortunately i can't give any more info on the repair as it's long gone from my memory! Did it a year or two ago.

I can see the fibreglass weave around the repair so definitely sanded thru too far. I've also just noticed a few other repairs where the crack is in the qcell layer itself, rather than where it meets the board, if that provides any extra info.

One thing is it is very important to remove the loose broken fiberglass along the edge of a crack because if there is space between the glass and the foam it will be a weak area that will be prone to breaking again. In addition if you leave a ridge of glass sticking up then you may sand through it when you tray to make it all smooth again leaving a weak area. If the area being patched is not completely clean and dry it may result in an area where the resin fails to bond making that area weaker. If the glass is too light then the patch will be weaker as well.
