Make your own fins

Postby silly_steph22 » Tue Oct 25, 2005 3:50 pm

Hey. I was thinking of making my own fins at school, with general workshop materials, but not fibreglass
Has any1 got any ideas about how I would go about doing this?
Thanks. Steph :D

Now, not meaning to be all negative or anything..... but.......

Fins are very precise bits of kits with respect to shape, size, stiffness, friction and other hydrodynamic thingummy bobs :?

And the slightest change makes a huge difference to the way a board surfs - I'm no expert on fin design, but I know what happens when I make even a tiny adjustment on the fins

If you want to build a fin 'to see what happens' then, cool, go ahead and let us know what you find out! :D

But if you're trying to improve on a standard fin or just get them for free then I doubt you'll have much luck! :?

re-enforced lexan is a good place to start materialwize... but if you're the same guy who posted on swaylocks, go search there.

I made one our of marine plywood years ago just for some fun.
Copied a template of an existing fin, cut it out with a jigsaw, sander the foil into it with a beltsander then applied a couple of coats of heavy duty marine varnish.

worked a treat for a few months till I snapped it.
