Rail saver position for pintail

Postby alex_k » Fri Mar 20, 2020 10:38 pm

Hi all,

I just picked up a single fin with a pintail, and the leash plug is very far forward, about 8" from the tail as opposed to 3" or so on my other boards. This makes the rail saver end over the deck and puts the swivel aligned with the rail when the leash is pulled back.

Should I extend the leash string to get the rail saver aligned with the rail? Or is there another better way to do it?

Thank you,
Alex

Personally I would do as you suggested, increase the string so that the rail saver is over the rails (check all of the rails, not just the tail).

If your current string isn’t long enough, buy some dyneema/spectra cord (or para cord, it’s cheaper but it’s not as strong; but still probably strong enough). 4 mm is usually about right (3mm is also fine for dyneema). If you are a bit nervous about having a longer string, or planning on bigger waves (or just want the comfort), tie 2 leash strings for extra protection (thread 2 separate strings through the leash plug and then attach both to the Velcro)

Edit: just noticed your leash plug - probably you can only do one string. 4mm dyneema will be more than strong enough, you just need to check it for nicks etc as usual. But it’s tough stuff

The other benefit of having a roll of dyneema is that you can replace the string whenever you feel the need, because you have the stuff handy.

Thanks DTC! As always I appreciate your informative and helpful comments. I'll extend that cord and see if I can find a roll of dyneema.
