Is this fixable?

Hi Folks,

I just bought a secondhand board for pretty cheap. When I was inspecting it, it looked a little beat up but I figured I could just get it repaired professionally and still have gotten a good deal. Anyway, can this crack be fixed? It is on the bottom, about 1.5-2 feet from the tail. It goes from the rail to the stringer. It appears to be just a crack in the glass to me, but from what I've been reading, it may be more of a problem than I thought. Wondering if this is fixable? Or if I should just count my losses and surf it til' it snaps? It appears to be watertight.

Let’s cover it for you.
There is a poorly fixed ding on the rail.
Rails hold a large portion of the strength of the board with their lapped glass, that structural strength was lost with the ding.
The board was ridden and the board was flexed by a wave. Hence the crack! That is where your board will break if not fixed, it may not happen for a while but each time you surf the area of the crack will flex and break the fibres in the glass.
The board can be fixed, proper rail repair and patch over the crack!

Cost? see your professional.
A question, did you buy before inspection?
What did you consider pretty cheap?

Thanks for the info! I got it for 150USD with fins and a leash. It's in half decent shape minus what's shown in the pics. I did inspect it and I figured even if I spent $100-$150 on repairs, it'd be worth it as it's a $700 board plus shipping up to Canada. Just wanted to get some input on if it is worth spending the extra $ on to fix properly or if it is structurally compromised and will probably snap regardless. Thinking I'll get er fixed though.

I haven't ever tried to fix a board like that but imagine there is some way to glue or fix the broken foam and remove and re-glass at least a couple inches around the break in the foam. no clue how to go about it but if it was free I would give it a try myself. Thoughts are some kind of glue that can penetrate the foam and stick a tube down into the crack and squirt it deep than further out. Another idea would be to get a bunch of bamboo skewers and remove the glass 2 inches around the crack then run the skewers diagonally across the crack but stop short of going all the way through then cut off the ends flush with the foam and use something to push them in further. Another idea is to drill out diagonal holes and fill them in with resin plus q cell. Another idea is to find a compatible foam and carve out the fractured foam and fill with the foam let it harden and reshape it. I haven't done any of these things and not sure if any of it will work. I suspect this is a high performance board? made weak so it will be weak even if you could fix it completely.

Yes your board is fixable. From pics it looks like it started at the poorly repaired rail ding.

nswaves, yes, fixable (reinforced). I'd use 2 ounce cloth and try to get away with one layer. I'd use two layers, if one just doesn't seem like will make it strong enough. Do NOT use 6 ounce cloth! Use one layer of 4 ounce if you absolutely cannot obtain 2 ounce cloth. This thicker clothes will add weight (an unbalance the board) and reduce natural board flex. billie
