Buying a board that's been repaired.

Postby BaNZ » Fri Aug 09, 2019 1:45 am

The shop received a brand new board that has two small holes in the bottom. Kinda looks like two nails got into it. Also the nose of the board has scratches. All of this has been repaired by the shop and they say it's just cosmetic and water tight.

The board is $700 something and they are willing to take $120 off. Does it sound like a good deal or I should stay away from it?

It's an epoxy board and glassed. I'm a little puzzled on how they were able to get two holes in an epoxy board. Those thing should be bulletproof.

I was a surf board warehouse manager. You'd be surprised what can happen in transit across the ocean, in the warehouse and on the way to the shops. Murphy's Law applies.

Was the damages truly a hole or just the paint layer and top sheet ?

I should say the holes are small but it runs deep. I did not ask them how deep it is. It was closer to the fins.

They haven't completely fill the hole when I was there. He said something about not wanting to melt it so he was waiting for something. Then he proceeds to take out a metal can and said he is going to fill the holes now. Which I'm assuming it's resins.

I know you said not to buy a new board. But I miss my torq so i gotta get one. Then I'm selling my fun board so I'll just have two longboard!

If the holes are small and not on the rail, it should be a straightforward repair and not affect the structural integrity of the board. So just going by your description, I think it's worth the discount but I guess it depends on your budget, etc.

The first board I bought had a foam defect because of which the shaper gave me a discount for it. It cost me $90 instead of $135. That was an awesome board! I wondered if he was thinking "Hmmm I'm going to get this guy addicted to my boards so I will sell him cheap then raise the cost." But he never took advantage of my addiction to his boards
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.
