I'm not a hull surfer (although they have always interested me, since I tend to be a heavy front foot surfer anyway) but they are said to go well in smaller waves if the waves are clean. Not sure how well they go if the waves are a bit mushy or choppy; because the hulls 'sink' into the waves, if the face isnt that smooth there can be complications. But as you already surf a hull then that is perhaps something you already deal with; and you can always take out your current board in those circumstances.
What length are you looking at? I find I can swap boards that are up to a foot difference and its not too bad, but anything over that and it takes a couple of sessions to tweak my technique to fit (I should make a post about how I was recently humbled by a longboard after not surfing one for 10 years...); plus of course if you are used to surfing a 7'8 then going much below 7ft is going to be a very different experience.
