Cut by my glass on fins:(

Postby Ratfinksurfer » Thu May 16, 2019 2:20 pm

So I just got a really awesome new Chris Christenson Nautilus surfboard with glass on fins. It's a 6'10", no logos, beautiful and minimal. So I took it out in some head high surf and got pummeled! But that's another story. When paddling over a set wave I must've lost control of the board and felt something hit my foot. Didn't even know how bad it was cut until I got out of the water an hour later. And No, of course I didn't wear booties. I had them in my car but I like the feeling of wax on my feet. Ugh. So I'm debating sanding the edges of the fins. The leash I use is a 6'0". Maybe a 7' leash would've spared my foot this deep gash? I'm wearing booties from now on with this board anyways, but I really don't want to get cut by these damn razor sharp fins again.

check to see if there are any chips in the fins - if there are then that's probable the cause. or they have left the edges too sharp when they glassed them on.

when you glass a fin on it's done with wetted out glass rope around the base then patches of glass cloth on ether side of the fin, if there is a clear 'halo' around the fin then that can be taken right back.

shouldn't be any harm in blunting the training edge, you can use some wet and dry automotive paper or some white aluminium oxide paper.

Depending on the fin shape you may need to blend out a little on the tip.

Yes, as a matter of fact the fins are chipped. It's difficult for me to ascertain which part of the fin cut me. the trailing edge of the tips are the sharpest. The chipped part is along the leading edge in the middle.

Sand down the fins. First thing I do to all fins. There is no benefit to sharp edges and a lot of risk.
