Surfing Waves

Finally got myself a better board, a 8'6" Torq new on sale.

Since I (for now) still live in an apartment I am worried about dings when taking the board to / from car. The plastic Bic was not an issue, but this is different construction.

Should I get a board sock? Can I put a board in a sock on the roof of my car? I don't have the cash to splurge on a bag right now after this purchase

There are some pretty affordable bags on storeyourboard.com, not that much more than a board sock, really. The brand is called Curve, I have three different sized bags, I think they were all between $80 and $120. You could also check craigslist and find a deal.

Having said that, those torq boards are pretty indestructible, so you may not even need a bag, it’s just convenient for carrying it.

Two things to remember, the sock , draw string opening to rear, pull the sock tight under the straps on the racks, the sock will stretch and flap.
Socks soak so they stretch in the rain and drum on your roof.

Guess what the padded nose means you rack your board fins to rear.

Exactly this. My first board sock got wrecked by the fins, rain and the flapping. I stupidly bought another one, they are really not suitable for outside the car. You should try getting a board bag.

As I'm the person on the forum who has probably the most Torq surf boards. I can assure you that they are indestructible to dings and dents. My friend dropped my board off the roof rack and just suffered some paint scratches. I smashed my rails into the rocks while surfing and it just had a small crack that was easily repaired.

The only downside of not using a boardbag or sock for roof rack is that your board is going to end up super filthy.

thanks for the reassurance. I just wish there was something to cover the nose when I carry it around doors.

I just checked on storeyourboard, and a quality board sock is $49.00+shipping. That Curve bag I mentioned is $83.00 with free shipping. So you’re probably looking at a $25 difference, and the bag is going to last years and be way more functional.

Thanks for the tip. I saw a board sock for this size board for 30 something on Amazon. I'm now thinking of using one only while taking the board from the car into the apartment and back.

The area between the racks is where the soggy sag occurs, I pull my drawstring tight and then pull the sock tight nose to tail ( they quite stretchy front to rear and sideways) pull the excess into a bun and use the length of the drawstring beyond the tightened toggle to lash the bun into place. Alternately I fold the excess back under the board before I tie it down!

snatched it up haha. since I'm storing the board in a 2nd bathroom I or guests might need to use if we really have to go.... not taking chances with the board hitting someone.

so logically next question is, is it OK to keep the board in the bag while at home? should I open it up to help it dry?

I am so effing stoked to try this board, not worry about dings and catch more waves. Hopefully this week .

I leave mine open, I’ve smelled some ripeness leaving them closed in humid conditions. They are great bags, not overkill at all, you’ll see. Pretty perfect day or travel bags, just enough protection, just enough lightness where needed. I’ve shipped boards to Mexico in them, and I use the same one a couple times a week, still.

If you surf in clean water, then not drying probably is fine - there is nothing on a board that should rust (although fin screws and leash joins are metal and will eventually). Boards are meant to be wet! But the water itself shouldn’t smell too much.

But a tiny bit of dirt or pollution- almost inevitable if you surf near a large population centre - and the impurities can start to smell etc. ideal is a quick rinse with fresh water (are beach showers a thing outside Australia?) and you are fine.

Knowing BaNZ well and claiming him as one of my soul brothers, I'll add to this comment: 1) he really does possess more boards manufactured by Torq than anyone else in our forum, and 2) he's totally clumsy and these boards survive the beating!

Congrats on your torq! Now you can ditch the bic and get stoked on the torq Report back once you have a chance to ride it!

I read that the shoulder strap is not detachable, just wondering if you know a good way to tuck it between the roof rack pads and board so it doesn't flap when driving. Or other ideas.

water's clean but there can be algae sometimes. I don't have access to hose or shower, I might just rinse it with a jug of fresh water once in a while.

I use a velcro strap that wraps around the excess sock. I can take a photo the next time I'm out with my board. However that also destroys the sock as it sticks onto the cotton sock. I'm probably going to have to get a cheap boardbag eventually.

thanks. I bought a cheap board bag hope it's more durable than a sock.
