Beginner lookign to get a board. Advice needed.

I am loooking to get into surfing. I would like to get a board that i would be able to use for a couple years. I am 5'6" 165 lbs. I am looking for a short board. I have tried friends and rentals before, but id like something of my own. Any suggestions on size, brands, etc.. is greatly appreciated. Thanks
