my surfschool's foamies all have holes in them and let water

They're patched up but the patches are not 100% effective. They start out fine but gradually get more and more saturated, to the point at which I could hardly carry the ten foot foamie back to the hut after my 1.5 hour session, it was so heavy from all the water it had shipped.
How much will this affect the board's handling during the actual ride? It seems to get harder and harder to turn (standing, on the wave) as the sesssion wore on. Certainly positioning for a wave - turning it "quickly" by sitting back to get the nose up and swinging it round -became nearly impossible due to the weight...

As you suspect, it is not ideal.
Is changing schools to one with a fleet of boards without holes an option?

Try dragging a huge plastic bag full of water around while you paddle- one leaky foam board.
Another surf school another board is necessary!

Ask your surf school to supply you with the proper equipment. You're paying for it so you might as well make sure you're getting it. If all their foamies are waterlogged, then ask for a high volume hard board longboard.

The biggest thing they have in non-foamies are 2x longboards, about eight and a half foot long, but they dont appear to have much volume. I might give 'em a try...

The best one I had was when I first started renting board. They told me you don't need the fins. You can still surf without it. Which is probably true for beginners but that is really bad to charge me the full price.
