Problem of dehydration while surfing?

Postby Sitio » Wed Jan 25, 2017 2:05 am

Hi all,
I am a student researching a possible solution to easily prevent dehydration while out surfing without affecting performance. How much would people be willing to pay for this additional product? Any feedback would be great. Thanks!

???

You mean like a drink? A little igloo cooler inside an inner tube with an anchor that you could moor off the shoulder of the wave? (I've thought about it :) ). Or something like a camelback that you could wear while surfing, even squeeze off some sips while on the face....

I'm curious anyway....other than bringing something to drink in some way I would guess the only other way would be to develop a way to retain more liquid so that you could load up prior to paddling out. I drink about 300-400ml of sports drink (pocari) and an equal amount of water before I go out and I'm good for as long as my usual sessions last (up to 3 hours). I begin about a half hour before I get in the water and over the course of that half hour I load those liquids (before leaving the house or work and while driving/unloading stuff).

Do you have an idea or is this post only to determine if having an idea would be a good idea? Would like to hear it if you do have one.

Maybe a drone that flies from your fridge to your board via a GPS sensor?

I appreciate the responses. Participating in a mock startup company development for school and working on a wetsuit that has a hydration bladder integrated into it in a way that does not affect performance. Why or why not is our solution valuable?

I don't wear wetsuits and don't surf long enough to require hydration
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

I don't know if you saw my comment I posted but it briefly explains the product solution that we came up with. Would love feedback on the idea.

Feedback would be that wetsuits are expensive; I don't wear them but have in the past and would not want a well fitted tight suit to have a bladder pocket stuffing up the fit and something that I would have to live with whether or not I was filling it up. Second bit is that I'd try to sell to the tropical surfer before the cold water surfer if the goal was to sell the need of hydration. If included in the wetsuit, I would design it to be removable so that a person didn't have to have that bladder in the way all the time; they could choose when they wanted it. But then again that is essentially a camelback design which could be worn under the suit.

Gatorade energy chew and a little bit of juice beforehand, Powerade(s) and lots of water after the session.
Basically a large intake of fluids and electrolytes,

Would just be extra weight and be uncomfortable paddling with water sloshing around I don't really think hydration is a valid problem if you take a certain amount of fluids before, yes it could benefit how long you stay out but there's no point because your arms will be dead.
I like surfing, surfing is fun...

Questions for you Sitio:
1) do you surf ?
2) if you surf, how long do YOU surf for ?
3) if you surf in cold weather and wear a wetsuit, how long does your wetsuit last ?
4) wouldn't having "another" item add to the GoPro, Trace, shark repellent leash, Garth helmet, webbed gloves, gizmos etc. that people already have on their boards ?

Wave. Board. Surfer. Simple.

"No, but I have skate boarded for 14 years, snow boarded for 5 years, and friend who surfed on a vacation to the Bahamas. Why?"

"Water, water everywhere and all the boards did shrink
Water, water everywhere and not a drop to drink."

Writes Samuel Taylor Coleridge about the hard times when short boards were invented.

Could be used for alcohol:)
It is easier to have some water in a bag on the shore.
