Surfing hats - are there any non-terrible ones?

So I've been looking for a woman's surf hat for a while now, with the aim to keep the sun off my face, because I can never get sunscreen to stay on and because I'm vain and don't want premature wrinkles.

However, I have never seen a good looking surf hat in the water, or even a not-so-terrible one. I'm already pretty "kooky" in the water, and I don't exactly need a big red waving flag.

Does anyone have any recommendations? Can a surf hat ever be stylish?

I personally wouldn't buy white as it can get dingy pretty quick but maybe you can keep it good looking longer than me. I have a gray one(unisex). I haven't worn it yet as I'm afraid I wipe out way too much for any hat stay on.

I use a stick type sunblock on my face. It's a lot thicker and sticks better. I look totally whitewashed but there are enough surfers and lifeguards looking just like that around here so I have company :D

No - but the hat wearer can be stylish

i was actually talking about this the other day - I'm male and was surprised to learn just how few surf accessories (once you get past the wetsuit) are made for women/in womens sizes or even with interesting colours (beyond black and grey)

The best you can do is probably the dakine womens indo hat, although I havent researched this much

I have the Dakine hat, and Seaspecs sunglasses, for those small early morning days when the sun is beating down on your face.Of course, can't really use it half the year because I wear a hood. I don't care much about looks but the hat does sometime tend to come low on my forehead and block my view a little.

Never seen a round hat in a lineup here, people in morroco just wear normal baseball caps and grab onto them when they wipeout

Also some people with back zipper wetsuits tie the zipper to the back of their caps so they don't lose them :D

The dakine already has a small carabiner-like thingy to attach to your zipper tab

Thanks for all your replies. It does look like the Dakine is the most "stylish" of the lot. How does it hold up with wipeouts?

Reckon that depends on what and where you're surfing....

I have an FCS bucket hat (like the dakine photo) that I wear sometimes.....it doesn't come off.....then again, I also only wear it when I'm long boarding in head high or less surf where for the most part my head stays dry.

I've worn a baseball hat with no strap as well....I put a hand on my head if I fell and it was all good.

It stays on quite well, I thought I'd break this up with a series of fashion shots from the varied island sojourns of Uncle Jaffa.
Stylish is as stylish does , some are surf worthy.

Ok. You'll might have to adjust it. But it stays on.

Sorry. Mine is FCS brand. Kinda looks like the Dakine pictured.

East coast of Australia, and mostly on small mushy days (hopefully). But I can and will wipeout at any time

Very stylish Uncle Jaffa - although I'm on the fence about the rhino one!

You might even run into Jaffa in the surf, hopefully without that hat (rhino or devil?); he surfs far south NSW coast.

Noticed from your blog that you are (again) a lawyer - me too. Good to see another one, since its well known that lawyers are able to be experts on anything within an hour. In any case - I really like your blog, very well written and on point. I'll probably link to your posts on buying a first board and a 2nd hand board (if you dont mind) as they are excellent answers to questions that often come up here.

Thanks dtc for pointing out her blog. I had a read and concur. It's a very sensible picture of learning to surf and full of great advice for beginners.

The thing I like about the FCS versus the Dakine bucket hat, is that the brim flips ups and stays up for the most part.
