Surfing Waves

Hey guys, new kid on the block here.

So i was into surfing for a long time and after long anticipation i got my first softboard on thursday. Although reading and watching a lot of info before doing so i had done some trial and error in my last few sessions, i had lots of free time and excitement so i had been to the beach on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday as well.
On the first session i didn't use wax, as many people suggested i should see how the foamie feels first. Then I decided that for the next session I'll try the wax out. I waxed the board just like how everyone instructs right before i got into the water. In all next session i would notice something weird in my opinion when checking the board after the session.

What could possibly be the issue? Could it be the amount i used or applying it directly before surfing?
Im using sex wax tropical base coat.

Forgot to add, i heard about top coat but forgot to ask the guy at the surf shop. Is it necessary? Would it be a big difference and how much should i use?

Btw what are usually the costs of wax?

I think you're fine just using common sense. Use enough wax to keep you from slipping. If you surf the board enough, you'll begin to notice when it's getting slippery and needs more wax. Find the amount that works for you. You can use a base coat wax, but on a sponge board I don't think you really need it. Wax seems to stick pretty well to the sponge. I'd only add that you should use wax that's suited to the water temperature you're surfing in. If you're in the tropics, then you don't want to be using cold water wax. Have fun.

Did you tell the surf shop guy what type of board you'd be putting the wax on ?

You Do Not need Base Coat on Soft boards. And on hard boards, you do not use base coat by itself. It is the Primer paint before you put the top layer of paint.

You Do Not wax soft board like you wax hard boards. Just use as little as possible, just make hash tag marks in the areas you need. Do not make Karate Kid circle strokes.
