Surfing Waves

Here in Santa Barbara, the Channel Islands block a lot of the Pacific Ocean waves. However, if one goes west from Santa Barbara into my beloved Gaviota Coast, once can often find surf. Access is difficult and there are many secret spots. If one has an appropriate boat, he / she can access the entire Gaviota Coast and find the surf at any given tide.

I'm thinking toward retirement and anticipate supplementing our food by trapping the delicious rock crab, fishing, and collecting kelp. I'd also like to go to the Channel Islands. These islands lay 30 to 50 miles off shore depending on which one you have your bearing set for, as well as where you depart. The fishing is phenomenal there and there is nearly always surf on the Pacific Ocean side of these islands.

So, I look for the right kind of boat to make all this possible. There is a dandy advertised in the Santa Barbara marina at present. Here are the photos of her. Even though it is kinda early in my (financial) plans. I think I will ring the broker about this boat. One additional advantage with this work boat is there is a slip available for it. Slips are difficult to obtain in Santa Barbara due to high demand.

Good design...can handle relatively heavy seas and has a deck designed for work. Backup engine important for remote location access safety. Looks a winner!

I'm sure you know but even more so than a car, the true costs of boat ownership really only begin at the buying price. I've never owned a boat but worked on them and been responsible for maintenance and upkeep; the joy of being out on the water makes it all worthwhile.

Nice boat. There's something about the thought of sipping coffee inside a solidly built pilothouse on a boat at sea that draws me to the life of a sailor.
