Which rashguard brand?

Debating these two rashies. They both offer UV protection, yet the Hurley one looks slightly shorter on the body than the Quiksilver one. I don't live around any shops that sell rashies, so I can't necessarily go into a store and try them on. I'm gonna have to wing it. Thoughts on either? Is there really a big difference between the two besides the design?

Not a lot, no. Whichever one fits best wins, but if you can't try them on, yeah, you'll need to wing it.

I have quite a lot of Hurley stuff (just coincidence) and can't fault it.

If you're buying a new rashie, err on the side of small - they stretch quite a lot quite quickly, so if you're between two sizes, I find that the smaller one is usually a better bet. And as for sun protection, the white one will keep you cooler in the water if you're surfing somewhere hot.

Dammit, we're just beginning to get 'a bit cool' and the rashie will be going into the wardrobe for a month or two!

I too need a new rashguard soon, the old one is getting more and more flabby, now my question is more related to photography, so maybe Drowningbitbybit can give some advice?

I bought this Sony a6000 camera with a 200mm lens for the wife,.. ahem.. so among other things she can shoot some surf action on photo and video, I hope.. We had a test trial the other day where my wife said she had troubles finding me in the (almost empty that time) lineup, and it was easier to autofocus on the other guy wearing white, I was wearing a black rashguard.

Ok, I get it that an other color then the usual black is easier to identify in a busy lineup, maybe I will change my hat-color for that, now i think of it.

But my question is: are in surfing some rashguard/hat colours easier for the autofocus system to work with? It would be nice to use that Lock-on AF on the backbutton to keep a moving subject in focus.

Whatever colour offers the biggest contrast to the water colour is my guess - but DBB is obviously your guy.

I know surf lifesaving in Australia has studied this and the colour that offers the most contrast (ie the best chance of being seen ) is ....

In theory, yes, but it'll be hard to predict as it'll change on a day-to-day moment-to-moment basis.

Back to basics - cameras autofocus by finding a nice contrasty line, so the colour won't matter, but the light/dark contrast between the surfer and the water/sky will. So on a dark green ocean or in a deep blue barrel, the white rashvest would - in theory - be better for autofocus, particularly if you're using a multi-point AF (rather than a single point).
If you were up and over the lip doing an air, the black rashvest might just autofocus a touch faster.

To get autofocus working really well, it's often best to shoot when the sun is shining straight at the surfer at an angle (mid-morning or mid-afternoon). That way there's a good contrast between the surfer and the wave, and there shouldn't be too many shadows to confuse the camera ... unless that lip really does get right over you

Thanks for the clear answer, it seems there's no strong preference for a certain color (except the pink dtc showed) so I buy just whatever is there and appeals to me.

The pink could be an option off course, if the guys in the line-up look at me a bit funny I can always explain it's for autofocus

I think the contrast will be ok when surfing the west-coast in the morning, the sun is then behind the photographer looking at the surfers.

Having tried on just about every big name rashie in shops killing time while the wife is going around the rest of the mall, Quicksilver fits me the best, Rip Curl right behind. Had one of each and wore them both quite a bit (around 100x for each, wore them in rotation). I left the rip curl on the beach one day, the quicksilver is folded in a drawer because I don't really like tight rashies I decided, but it is still good.....hasn't stretched out or deformed and neither had the rip curl before I lost it.......quality of the product for either I can't fault and would recommend the one that fit you best as being the swing factor.

brand does not matter much for stuff like this. One of my favorite rash guards is an inexpensive one purchased at Ron Jon's surf shop in Cocoa Beach, FL. Another one of my favorites is a well made offering from a major surf apparel manufacturer. See? No particular rules apply.

Have any of you guys used Hurley rashies before? I know many people have used Quiksilver and say they're good. What about Hurley? In pictures, Hurley looks to be a little short, but idk if that's how rashies are supposed to be.

VOLCOM (Taiwan) Blue on one side Yellow on other, Good for other surfers to spot. Stays tight, feels and looks like quality wet suit material. Very happy with quality, Shop wanted $80.00 I got em down to $68.00 so their mark up must have been 100% Hurley is most common here but they look and fit like a saggy t-shirt, always black in color (HOT) Shop around! rock on

If OP isn't wearing it for surfing (which it sounds like the case) yum yum yellow would be just as fine. Black is hot... temp wise. I prefer it b/c I want to stay warmer. White gets dingy pretty quick. Just order one from a online retailer that offers free return shipping and exchange away. I've only worn rip curl and body glove. I like the fit and the thickness of rip curl better.
