I've been doing a lot of my own ding repairs with solarez. I just cracked the nose of my board today all the way down to the foam and some of the foam actually came off. Is Solarez meant as more of a quick fix? is it just as strong as using a resin kit and cloth? also is it ok to put the solarez directly on the foam? I have the PU solarez and my board is PU.

The answer is yes and yes. Quite few forms of solar resin have fine glass particles in them and will do the job as long as you ensure strong bonding to existing glass by pre sanding around the ding.

The full glass job is usually stronger as it provides a cloth glass reinforcement around the ding.
Main thing is to ensure that water cannot get to the stringer as real water sucking problems and wood expansion begin if the stringer soaks water!

Personally I use. Solar resin as a temporary fix to keep surfing and the water out and then do a full job later. This is because I keep my favourite boards for a long time and the solar stuff eventually comes away with cracks around the ding.

My last dings were rail crushes by Garuda in air transport from Lombok. Right through the pool noodle protection!

the regular "yellow" tube Solarez is to repair the broken/cracked resin/fiberglass. It hurts to see a 2 inch wide 1 inch deep hole filled with pure Solarez. If you lost foam, your want to re-build it up with the "white" Solarez Microlite filler. It's easy to sand to match the blank's shape. Then you cover that with the PU Solarez. From what I remember, the Microlite filler floats, the PU sinks.



If you're going the resin/catalyst/cloth route, make sure to get some Q-cell or micro-balloon to remake the foam.

Ok. Thank you. So use the microlite to build up where the foam is missing...sand it down and then the yellow tube as the out shell? Ive never used the microlite before...can you not use it for the entire repair?

No, it has no strength. Just as you need to glass over the finished shaped blank, you need to cover the Microlite Filler with Solarez or resin/catalyst/fiberglass cloth ( or UV resin if you have ).
