How bad does this look?

Postby BaNZ » Fri Sep 11, 2015 12:41 pm

My friend dropped his board last weekend. It is an epoxy board but I'm surprised it made such a large crack. About 15cm. He only surfed it a few times.....

I would get his fixed because it is ugly but I don't think water is getting in.

He got a quote for £65! How does that sound?

Definitely need to get that fixed it will take on water quickly. Looks like that foam sandwich epoxy construction from surf tech and gsi. That looks like the foam (not eps foam but sandwich foam) peaking through. 65 dollars would be expensive for such a simple repair let alone 65 pounds...

Dry it out, sand it down, fill it with q cell then put some cloth over it. Really easy repair imo and I'm not that great at ding repair.

65 pounds sounds like a lot. For that much one would expect that once done it would not only be stronger than the original in that area but also render the crack and repair competely invisible so you couldn't tell it ever had a problem.
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

The ding / crack looks over a foot. Some ding repair places have a $10 an inch rule for dings. But repairing a EPS cost more than P.U. Also for molded epoxy boards you just can't just repair, fill, sand and leave it like that ( well you can if you don't mind a bald spot ). You have to paint it and it is very hard to get it right. Even if you have the factory official Surftech touch up paint, it won't match due to the age of the board, sun faded, etc.

If he doesn't mind doing it himself, I would recommend 2-part putty ding stick to fill in the crack, keeping it below the surface of the deck. Then once thats hard, go with a UV epoxy resin like epoxy Solarez. ( you're going to have to sand away an area of paint around the ding )

Oh right, on my own board I got a smaller crack that I've been surfing for a long time. It's about 2 inches. I better get a photo and check with you guys then. Wouldn't think it would take in water.

We live in tiny houses in UK so it is unlikely that we will be able to fix our own boards. Guess it is time to send it to the shops to do it professionally.

I fixed my board in a tiny 1bd apartment. It's a skill that not enough surfers know these days. It pays for itself on surf trips 10 fold. Water in an epoxy board and heat is a death sentence for that board. I've also seen some bad ding repairs. Just like a lot of stuff in life, If you want it done right nothing beats doing it yourself.

It's a bad crack, but it's not a difficult repair. Bring it with your cracked board to my house in Santa Barbara. Will fix it in a jiffy. Just finished a bunch of repairs to nephew Julian's red long board. Even I'm impressed with the results.

This is the crack on my own board. Much smaller. Perhaps around 1.5 inch. I've had this crack for about a year now and it didn't feel like any water was going in. But I might be wrong!

BANZ,
this crack should be sealed. From the photo, it looks like the fiberglass is not broken all the way through. Because it is not so bad, you can fix it with sun cure resin. You will sand the area lightly, but you do not need to apply glass. Get a small kit like this, preferably from Gabe's Surfing Wave website (e.g., "our" forum): https://www.phixdoctor.net/shop/sunpowe ... -4-oz.html

Apply the resin in the shade or in garage. There is no odor, so you can actually apply it in your house without Mrs. BANZ knowing. Apply the plastic film in the kit over the resin or tape over the resin with clear packing tape. Then place board in sun or in front of UV light. In full sun, it'll cure in 5 to 10 minutes. Remove plastic or tape and the surface will be quite smooth. May or may not require sanding along the edges where cured resin patch contacts board.
