Sand down to the glass and cut away any glass that lifts up off the foam then put a glass patch over it would be my method of fixing that ding.
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

This is a very easy and fast repair.
I'd do what Old Man said.
Select fiberglass that is no heavier than 4 ounce per yard.
I like using 1.5 to 2 ounce glass for things like this.
You buy this from radio control model airplane shops and wholesale fiberglass distrubtors.
I bought a big roll from the latter for very little money.
It's for a canoe project.

There are also complete kits that come with fiberglass resin and sandpaper that can be purchased online.

You should put a sanding coat over that layer to smooth it out. Just resin no fiberglass sand first then apply resin and sand to smooth it out.
