Repair pressure ding?

Postby trimalways » Wed Apr 29, 2015 4:12 am

Just got this pressure ding in my new board. A bit bummed, but know it's par for the course. My question to you is should I sand it down put some glass and patch it? My finger nail doesn't catch, but I can see the glass flex when I press on it with my finger. My guess is it will probably brown.

If you are worried then glass it. I would probably sand it down and resin it without glass but if that little circle in the middle is moving seperate from the rest then I would glass it.
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

First figure out how you got it. Thumb print death grab. Using Knee for duck dive.

From the looks of it, I would just rough up a bit and brush on some resin to seal it.

It happened from trying to grab my board from washing ashore. The turbulence filled it up and my elbow smacked it.

Doesn't look that bad I guess. Just as oldmansurfer and waikikikichan I would probably just sand it a little bit and make a resin layer to prevent it from turning into a leak later.

Pressure dings are going to happen eventually anyways, even water can make small pressure dents on a board. Of course you should always be carefoul not to hit your board hard to prevent them :).

Only one trouble with the tuff of the tufflite, if water does get in and it is not closed cell the areas between the beads of Polystyrene foam will rapidly take on water.
The newer epoxies compound sandwich use the closed cell foam. :D

Expanded polystyrene (EPS). From the Surftech boards I repaired, they all sucked in water. One of my XTR boards is extruded polystyrene (XPS). That one I know is waterproof. It actually has holes drilled all over the deck

Never trust a proprietary source.....maybe it's new tech, maybe surftech is just full of it.....anyway, I used to go to the repair shop a couple of times a month before I started to use two surftech boards primarily....I don't miss that....

A couple times a month? It's all those shallow reef breaks.

Don't get me wrong, I have repaired a lot of Surftechs. But I repaired WAY more PU/PE boards. Molded Epoxy boards are much better if you tend to get a lot of shatters and dings. But once you get a damage that goes to the core EPS, like a fin to the rail, you need to immediately get out of the water. One of my Southpoint Bonga board is over 10 years old and I never had to do a repair.

Yes OMS...surfed one break that would end in 2.5-3ft of water on lower tides with reef underneath....then standard bumps into and out of the car, kids "didn't do anything" and left a hole punched in the deck after paddling around on it...beachie closeouts that seem to always leave a mark, etc, etc.....I like epoxy paired with eps for the durability, float and weight....have one by a local shaper and three surftechs now...complaints that I've heard regarding feel and flex don't really apply to me since I am in effect learning on them and think this is how surfboards are supposed to feel.....

Thanks for the tip Waikikikichan....I'll make sure to exit the water immediately should I ding a board bad enough to open it up while in the water....

The ding suck test, mouth to ding suck, EPS if you draw air fix immediately if you draw water already too late. Fused Polystyrene no worries but fix anyway.
PU can survive for a while but foam will yellow shrink and get waterlogged and heavier.
Simple rule, to save you sucking hydrocarbon tainted air or water
Repair ASAP if you can click it or flick it with your fingernail REPAIR
