Need some advice on a second hand board

Postby vinyl4lyf » Fri Apr 17, 2015 12:22 pm

Hi all,

Just got hold of a board from someone, and it there is slight dip on the surface, which can usually happen apparently.

However at one point it seems to dip quite a bit at the stringer, not sure if it's something I need to get looked at? I'm not sure if it's just superficial and still watertight?

Get it looked at!
The foam has shrunk or been compressed and the glass has fractured along the hard ridge of the stringer, for cracks in the glass a simple rule of thumb = if you can click it or flick it it need fixing .
If there is browning or yellowing of the foam then there is water in the foam.
The board could still be worth fixing.

Damn, okay. I've uploaded some further photos, taken after I removed all the wax, they give a better perspective.

Luckily the seller has said they'll take it back if I'm not happy with it; they didn't notice it beforehand. It's still a shame as its a sweet board. You can see some slight browning, so it probably is a crack.

How much did you pay for it ? But no matters, the ding repair will cost some, and the same pressure crack will reappear or a delamination will form next to it.

Best advice is to return it, unless you got it cheap ( like $150 - less ). And NEVER buy a used board with wax on it. It could be hiding cracks or shatters like on the board you got.

I paid £150, which is approx $225, but quite a decent price for the UK. I've sent the photos to a ding repair guy, to see how much it would probably cost. The seller has said they'd pay for resin or possibly repair if I want to keep it. But you may be right, best bet might be to give it back, especially if your suspicion on it giving more trouble is true; I did wonder the same.

Thanks for all your input guys.

(Also; yeah, I didn't intend for the DOF to be that shallow, although it still works for the image haha. I switched from my small prime to kit lens for the photos, so it can't have been that low an f-stop. I think its mostly because the whole frame is only focused on a small area, so even with f5 it looks super shallow.)
