Hawiian Pro Designs

Postby CCSurfs » Mon Mar 09, 2015 11:19 am

Wondering if anyone has experience with Hawiian Pro Designs boards? I have an opportunity to step up from a Spoiler to a used 7'4 Scorpion Tuflite Epoxy model. I'm 5'8, 140. My other board is a 9'1 longboard. I like the idea of a shorter version of a longboard that will fit in my SUV rather than fighting the wind/weather to strap the 9 footer on top on stormy days. Consider myself beginner level of surfer but am working hard to advance my skills.

I think it will work for you it will be a little harder to paddle and being of Tuflite construction it will be a little more buoyant which may take up the paddling difference from a PU board.
You will find that you have to keep your drive on in turns as sometimes a tuflite will feel corky and white water can bounce it away.
But like all quirks you learn to use them.
keep the stoke and keep us informed of your progress :D

The Scorpion has a pin tail vs. round that I've had on other boards I've surfed. Any differences in performance that I should be aware of?

The difference will be if you want to really push your turns you can, and then have immediate acceleration, it won't be quite as forgiving as a rounded pin ( round tail) but will have more hold in steeper sections. Where you place your single fin in the box will do a lot of fine tuning for the board!
I like the scorpions! :D

i think it'll be fine for the situation your in, needing a board to fit in your car but yet have good float. Just be forewarned that those "trash can" noses tend to get in the way in the pitchy hollow sections. But for soft rollers and mushy sections, it'll be fun. Pin, squash, swallow, thumb, etc. etc. tails won't matter for a beginner. Just don't run all five fins.

It sounds interesting, CCSurfs. I'd like to try that board.

ok, it's a done deal, got the board. It really is a beauty. Current fin set up is big center fin with 2 side bites. Any advise on center fin placement -forward or back and what is the advantage or disadvantage for either placement?

Have a read of my fin primer, but put simply centre fin forward looser to turn, further back tighter in turns, if you have the side bite in don't go so far forward tht the front of the base of the centre fin is further forward thn the rer of the base of the side bites.
Do read the primer saves me writing it all again. have fun :!:
