HELP! Pulled up Laminate

Postby beachbumuk » Wed Jan 28, 2015 4:36 pm

Hi all,

To the point - I have just bought a HUGE Naish SUP (for something to do when its flat) - it had tail traction pads all over it and i have been removing them with no issues UNTIL:

one of the pads has pulled up a layer or so of laminate (very thin looks like varnish) its a wood and epoxy board.

Should I be concerned? how do i solve this, some resin put over the top to stick everything back down again?

thanks in advance!

BB!

Is it a wood blank? I am not sure exactly what you are saying but think you are saying it is a wood board with epoxy resin and fiberglass and you ripped off some fiberglass? If so then one of the possible repairs you might attempt would be to simply put resin under it and rettatch it to the wood then glass over the crack. you would want it to be dry first and you have to eliminate all air pockets or it will delaminate again fairly quickly. A picture would help.
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

The part that peeled up is the "Cheater Coat". It is hard to make Epoxy resin get a nice gloss polish. So to do that, they put a thin layer of Polyester resin on top. It safe so long as the laminated layers of wood and cured fiberglass are covering the base EPS. If you ever owned a wood Surftech, you noticed how easy the "glass" cracked on top of the wood veneer.

How to fix ? post a picture first.

It looks like it could be what waikikichan was talking about. Not sure how best to fix it but probably fixing it isn't necessary. Otherwise just use a little gloss coat???? Not sure hope Waikikichan will see this

Can't get a accurate opinion from the perspective of the photo. Need a slight side view. Can't tell if it's the cheater coat or actual glass lifting up.

Cheater coat from what I can see. You can try wet sand the edges down, but sooner or later the other bubbles will connect up and expand. If you intend not to put on another pad, I would just sand the edges down and wax over it.

Why'd you pull off the deck pad ?

Thanks! sounds good, I shall proceed with a little sanding.

As for why I removed it...please see the picture to see how it was when I bought it - most uncomfortable!

I KNOW RIGHT!

He must have found every 'on sale' deck grip he could to cover it...I know SUP decks are hard to come by, but I've just waxed the deck (its for my dad whos learning)

ALL of the other grips came off fine...except the Middle Black one towards the front of the board. its the ridged part of a tail grip and its the ONLY section that lifted anything...SOOO many bad words when it happend!

What a great rescue from an atrocity of deck grips. :spew:
