Substantial tail ding - how to repair

Postby lukehayman » Fri Jan 23, 2015 12:03 pm

Hi All,
I started surfing 3 or 4 months ago and am absolutely loving it. Thanks for all the collective tips and advice on this forum, has been really useful reading in these early stages! I'm popping up with no knees, carving down the line and even trying out some (pretty terrible!) cutbacks. Got a swell rolling in this weekend so feeling pretty pumped :).

I bought my first board recently for an absolute bargain - its second hand and had a bit of damage on the nose and the tail that had been repaired. Previous owner says that it's from collisions with another board whilst surfing. The repairs didn't look great quality but purchase was worth it, even if I only get a handful of sessions before it dies. Here's a shot of the nose repair:

And here's the tail repair (there's definitely a chunk missing but I won't pretend for a second that my surfing ability means that I can notice it in the ride!):

The nose is holding up ok but now the tail repair has cracked a bit after the last session. I can just about poke the end of my finger in and it's spongy (i guess that's soaking foam that I'm poking). Any suggestions on how to repair? Do you think I can just patch up the existing tail repair with some UV setting epoxy? Or am i better off removing the whole repair job and starting from scratch with some Q-cell, resin, glass etc?

Thanks in advance for the help!

I'd take a hacksaw and cut out a big bit of that tail, making sure I'd got rid of all the waterlogged foam, and then do a big repair with foam, cloth and resin. Obviously, for a cheap n' battered board you don't want to be spending a fortune, but I'd get a good quality repair kit that includes cloth, any foam if you can get it, and build that tail back up again from scratch.
By the time you've finished that, you'll be an expert ready to do proper repairs for your next board
You'll probably find me surfing, but if not, I'll probably be in the photography studio

...Or alternatively I'd just patch it up with some repair putty and live with it till I got a new board

Thanks mate, I've ordered some putty as local surf shop didn't have it. In the meantime I cleaned it up with methylated spirits and got some duct tape over it so I could get out for a weekend session! Seemed to work a treat.

I've also been inspired to order a repair kit so I can get rid of that crud on the nose and do a proper repair. Thanks for the tips!
