Fin Repair Question

Postby Andy92 » Sat Dec 20, 2014 3:24 pm

Hi everyone, I was out surfing this morning and went over a rock, thankfully the board and fin box is fine but i minorly damaged my new fins :( They're futures honeycomb and I have no experience with these. Was wondering if they need repaired or if its just cosmetic damage? Cheers Guys

One of my board has damaged fins like that too. I left it like that since it didn't feel like it was impeding my surf. It act as a reminder of how stupid I was to surf that close to the shore. In my defense, it was flat during my 2 weeks surf holiday and I was dying for any bit of swell.

I would be interested if anyone have a good idea of fixing it.

I imagine that will create turbulence in the flow of water and drag but not sure what fin is made of. If its epoxy and fiberglass then it would be easy enough to use solarez stuff on it, otherwise chopped up fiberglass and resin patch then sand it down. Make sure you know what kind of resin/material it is made of.
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

Get some Solarez or other UV curing quick repair.
If any of the fin ding is " flapping " , remove it. but don't make it worse
Get some Masking tape ( packing tape leaves a bad residue )
Tape up one side of the fin with an area an inch beyond ( or more if you're messy )
Find a shaddy area or go inside your garage but have proper ventilation
Gently knead the tube of Solarez to mix up the mixture that settled ,( I stuck skewers in and broke thru ! )
On the side without the tape, drip some Solarez laying flat on the table . ( less is more, more is more sanding )
Don't make a glob !!
If it runs, zap it in the sunlight for 10 seconds
Do the rest on that side, build up to a little mound just above level
Fully cure it for 15 minutes in bright sun
Put tape on that side and remove the tape from the other
Repeat process.
Sand with 320 , 400, 600 wet sandpaper ( you can use 240 if you made too big of a hump )
Use a sanding block if possible . Sand back and forth one time check, back forth check.
Don't sand the leading edge until the very last

Thanks guys for the replies. I unfortunately don't have any solares but i do have resin/ catalyst so could use that. It doesn't say on the futures website but I believe they're fibreglass construction. I'm not sure if it looks like it will need fibreglass?

Resin is brittle adding some chopped up fiberglass gives it more strength but the resin would work fine except that it would be more likely to crack and fall off with future abuse. I am not sure what material the fin is made of but if it is the same type of resin that should be fine but not durable
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

Fiberglass is used in both EPS ( Expanded Polystyrene ) and P.U. ( polyurethane ) constructions . So yes, your fin is made with fiberglass. But what the resin used is the difference. You can not use polyester resin on EPS foam. However you can use polyester or epoxy resin on P.U. However, I wouldn't be too concerned since it doesn't seem to reached the "foam" composite honeycomb anyways.
