Can I repair on my own?

I had a fin from another board hit the bottom of my surfboard (picture attached). Is this fixable with a Ding All repair kit? Or should I have it repaired by a professional at a surf shop? Any suggestions will help. Thanks

I think you can repair it with a Ding all repair kit. Make sure it is for whatever type of board you have because it may melt your foam. The ding all I got came with 2 part epoxy resin and fiberglass but I am not sure if the glass pieces are big enough for the job. The steps would include removing damaged fiberglass then filling the foam deficit and the Ding all repair kit has stuff to mix in the resin to accomplish that. Then you would sand it down and glass it and then a sanding coat and sand it down to make it smooth. It's much easier to get a pro to do it :) You want to overlap the fiberglass deficit by 2 inches. You might need 2 Ding alls and a bigger piece of fiberglass or maybe not...... I can't tell the exact size from the picture.

If it was just the fin slash, I'd say fix it yourself, but it looks like it's got a few square inches of glass missing?
So I'd get it professionally done, purely so it looks pretty afterwards, rather than a god-awful mess (...like my boards)

See if you can find someone to explain how to repair it while supervising you. I used to get my boards professionally repaired then got a few pointers and now do all my own. They aren't always pretty, but the amount of money I have saved in the last 15 years is ridiculous. You will never learn if you never try. If I was repairing that ding I would use q-cell to fill the whole then start with two of two layers of glass before sanding. Start on 60grit and go up to at least 400. Cut the first layer of two so it fits in the hole, then the next so there is at least an inch of overlap, if not more, around the missing section. Get a sanding block too.

2nd TheDrip. On the Q-cell fill, you want to make consistency more than pancake batter. Enough to where it doesn't drip of the mixing stick. The thicker the q-cell mixture the lighter it is. Problem with your ding is it's a slit. Hard to get in down into the narrow crevice. I recommend this product I use. It's UV curing, so you can pour a tiny bit in, let it go off in the sun, bring it back in and repeat little by little. Last step of the fill you can let it sit level and get it flat with the rest of the foam and glass over it.
