Ding Repair Question

Postby Andy92 » Sun Oct 05, 2014 7:26 pm

Hi everyone. I have a ding repair question. It's a relatively simple ding with foam showing, it is watertight however there is a compression mark right next to it which I'm a bit worried about. I'm not sure how much I should repair (ie Just the cracked glass or also compression)? Because its on the rail and underside I dont really want to mess it up. It's a PU board. Any help would be great thanks

There are two things one is a functional board and two is a functional board that looks nice. You can just fix the glass damage and the board will work fine but have a dent. If it were me fixing my own board I would sand down the damage to the glass then place a small piece of glass over it (overlap the cracks by 2 inches) and wrap it down into the dent, Then on the sanding coat apply a little more resin in the dent to make it more shallow. If you really don't want to screw it up then have a professional ding fixer repair it. :)
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

Thanks for the advice. I've sanded down the cracked glass however it looks like the shape of the rail has also been distorted. Do you think it would be possible to say sand down the compression and fill with a bit of Q-cell or something similar to reshape the rail? Cheers

I wouldn't fill in the compression. Can you tell us how the ding occurred ? Where on the board is the ding area ? Are you using a electric sander for the repair ? How old is the board ?

I don't think distorting the shape of the rail a little will affect performance in any noticeable way unless you are really good. There are lots of ways to fix the board, I would make sure you make it water tight and smooth it down. Not familiar with commercial repair products. But I guess if you are going to remove the glass in that area then apply a filler and smooth out the contour then reglass it that might be an option. If I were wanting to restore the contour I would do that or cut a wedge of foam out and replace it. However realize I have done lots of repairs before so I am comfortable with fiberglass, foam and PU resin. One thing you want to do is make sure you don't have any air pockets or delaminated fiberglass. If the fiberglass is loose you can either remove it or make sure you get resin between it and the board to reattach it. I would also listen to what waikikchan says cause I am sure he has fixed a lot of dings too
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

Here is a thought for you no matter how you go!
Rail integrity adds board strength with the round and top and bottom laps of glass!
Rails are also the most dinged part of the board , blunt trauma!
Most broken boards in normal usage can be traced back to a flaw in the rail integrity, so it is best to fix properly.

If your board is a good one , you can get it fixed professionally, or learn how to DIY properly.
If the board is a banger have go at really learning how to fix it.
I wouldn't fill, the dent , likely to add extra weight
