Quad fin options- too much fin?

Postby benjl » Thu Jul 10, 2014 6:10 am

Hey guys

So i ended up selling my quad fish to a mate of mine as it didn't really suit my purposes anymore.
However then the next day I saw a 6'0 shortboard with all the dimensions that I was looking to get custom made in Bali- it also has a 5 fin plug option which I was after! I haven't brought it yet but just looking at quad fin options as I just sold them with my old fish!

So here is my query: My old quad fish had fcs g5 front fins and GX middle fins and I haven't tried any other quads for comparison.
A shop close to me is selling fcs M2 fins on sale which only seem fractionally bigger and the guy recommended using them as the rears on a quad.

I'm only 70kg but would this configuration work with fcs G5 fins on the front and fcs M2 fins on the back?
Just wondering if this might be too much fin and defeat the point of running quad instead of thruster on small days to aid in speed.
Both are made from the same material, have 50/50 foil and same sweep etc. Just different sizes.

Specs are:

FCS M2 Fin Size: FSC G-X

Center Base: 4.26 in. 108 mm Center Base: 3.86 in. 98 mm
Center Depth: 4.22 in. 107 mm Center Depth: 3.93 in. 100mm
Surface Area: 12.03 in.² 8405 mm² Surface Area: 11.07 in. 7140mm2
Sweep: 32.3° Sweep: 32.3

In comparison- the G5/M5 fins are the below:

FCS M5 Fin Size:

Center Base: 4.37 in. 111 mm
Center Depth: 4.55 in. 115 mm
Surface Area: 14.76 in.² 9525mm²
Sweep: 33°

Thanks guys!

The guy that's selling these said he even ran all 4 fins with M2's.
What are your thoughts on this option for my weight?

Depends on the board they are going in and your height and weight. Wide tailed boards for small waves like a lot of fin. I've ran 4 m5s on my quad in really small surf to be able to pump speed up quickly. In bigger surf that much fin becomes tracky. I have gam fronts and pc2 rears right now and it works well on the grovel board

Thanks Old English. Check out my other post about my new board and take a look at the photos of the board these quads are going on?

I put GX's on the back with G5's on the front as the board really lacked speed when running the thruster set up.
I haven't tried the quads yet but I also got some double foiled M2's this afternoon but I would suspect (after trying the board) that it might slow it down too much?
