Boards?

Hey guys! I caught the surfing bug. I'm dying to get back out, but I need a board of my own. I've been surfing once but I picked it up instantly without any trouble. I've been skating, snowboarding, and wakeboarding all my life so it came very naturally. I surfed on a soft-top longboard and it was way to easy for me. I'm looking to get a short/funboard. I know getting a shortboard isn't recommended for a beginning surfer, but I crave the agility it brings. Also what would be a good size? I am 6' 2" and about 165 lbs.

I think you are actually a long way off being able to use the 'agility' of a shortboard. So I suggest something solid around 7ft, maybe a 7S superfish. Actually, I would suggest you try an 8ft proper longboard, but you arent going to, so I say 7ft and above. They are plenty agile for your first few years.

If you want a standard shortboard, despite advice, then pandaturo gave a good suggestion- your height, 19 inches wide and 2.5 inch thick. You cant walk into a surf shop and not see 200 of these boards. I'm not sure what you mean by 'style' - do you mean a fish or a quad or? With those dimensions just go for a thruster, it will probably be white and will have a pointy nose. Thats about all you need to take into account.

If you are asking about single to double concaves or channels or something like that, you arent going to notice for the first 5 years.

The difference between a softie longboard and a board under 7ft will surprise you.

Thanks! That actually really helped me. Would you recommend a fish over a funboard?

Sorry meant shortboard lol , if you like the maneuverability, you won't like a fish mainly because quick rail to rail transitions is what happens when you want maneuverability. Thus shortening the distance in between the transfer of weight from side to side and shortening the rail line making it more skatey gives you what you want. Fishes don't cut back like a short and the rail to rail transitions have to be long and drawn out compared to a shortboard.

hey guys, I did some more reading today and I think a fishboard would be perfect for where I live. The waves around here are pretty mushy but still catchable.
