Would you buy wave catching gloves?

I'm tempted on buying them, the reason: I want to catch more waves and steal more waves. I feel that sometimes especially when tired I just can't paddle fast enough to catch some waves, and when not fast enough either the wave passes me, somebody else steals it, or I get wiped out.

These gloves seem to be inexpensive and noninvasive. However most people report getting extremely tired of paddling with them since you move more water, and that it an also create enough stress to get injured.

Wouldn't you be able to get used to them and actually develop more stamina over time? the manufacturer says it builds upper body strength. Does that mean it will help me add volume to my muscles to not even need them after a while?

Or are they just plain useless and will get me tired or injured?, anyone?

i did, din't like them, but know friends that do, and they like the ones you posted, not the ones made out of neoprene. For me it did not seem to make it any better, because of the resistance I paddled slower, which I was not used it, so for me it was a no-win for using them.

A bit late to this but remembered something while I was doing lap swimming today with hand paddles. Although the resistance does mean you go further for each stroke, you have to push harder - no free power! So its a trade off - you paddle further but each paddle is more effort and it does put more strain on your joints (eg shoulder) if your paddling technique is wrong.

Whether the gloves are better or worse than nothing for your situation I dont know. Its sort of like peddling a stationary bike - if you put it into a higher gear and pedal at the same rate you will go faster, but your leg muscles will hurt more. If you pedal more slowly you can maintain the same speed, but still more effort (less 'aerobic' and more 'anarobic').

The additional resistance will certainly assist in building the muscles, even if only a little bit, over no gloves. But remember that muscle strength is not the same as stamina - otherwise powerlifters could run marathons (or marathoners would have huge legs).

I use gloves all the time, no problem once you become used to them, just don't carelessly try a hand stall, it could rip your shoulders.

BTW, most guys I know that wear webbed gloves are either longboarders or bigboarders. Even my bud that surfs he uses a 6'8 king fish surfboard. I'm a big dude, thought I would like them, but as Jaffa posted, you either do or don't like them, there is no shoudl or shouldn't

I didn't like them. I borrowed a pair from a friend and felt really stupid. I never see them in southern California. Like surfing with as little gear as possible - sucks in winter.

Just work out more and build up your arm strength/stamina.

I'm 64,I've been surfing for over 56 years, would love to surf with as little gear as possible but gloves help me , personal choice!!! I have good arm strength and stamina, also prevents melanomas on my hands which are also my tools of trade!!!!
I wear whatever I want

and use whatever helps my surfing
