Can I move to a 6'3

Hey,

I've been surfing for 3 years though have had a dry spell for 4 months due to broken board. Looking to get back on the waves. I previously owned a 6'8 epoxy swallow tail witdh 21 thickness 2 1/4 which I was quite comfortable with. The board I'm looking switch to is a 6'3 fiberglass squash width 18 1/2 thickness 2 3/8 .

I'm just wondering what people think of the move, last thing I want is to be caught with no waves :S though I feel I can handle it. For interest the area I will be surfing most is Santa Cruz area.

Thanks
Rob

Not the length I'd worry about with that move but the width :?
18 1/2 is a very skinny board, and would feel a world away from a 21" wide board.

Any chance you can test out the potential new board?

Possibly, if the seller is obliging. Your thinking just from a balance point of view?

From an everything point of view really :?
Narrow boards feel different, paddle different, float different (...etc etc...) compared to a wide board. Knocking 2 and a half inches off the width will make at least as much difference as knocking 5" off the length.

Think of it this way - 2.5" out of 21" is 12% of the board (I have a feeling I should have converted that to decimal really, but never mind) while 5" out of 6'8 is only 6%.

(I realise that's an oversimplification because a board isnt a uniform rectangle, but you see my point)

Not saying you definitely wouldn't be able to use the board, but I'd just be careful before going so narrow.

Thanks for the help. I've emailed the seller and fingers crossed he will let me test it out.
