Ding repair question

Postby metrosurf13 » Thu Feb 28, 2013 4:39 am

Hi,
I've managed to get a ding in the rail of my board. It's pretty hard to take the board to a shop so was wondering if anyone could guess about how much a shop would charge to fix?

Also it's not very deep, would it be OK to just spread some Solaz around to seal it? Or would I need to first cut away the damaged area?

Thanks

I would charge £30 to fix a ding like that. As the glass weave is broken it really should be fixed with a patch of glass. You could use a mix of resin and microfibres too. Solaz on its own would be ok as a temporary fix but long term i would not rely on it.

I'd plonk some aluminium tape over it (you can buy a roll for around a fiver!) - job done (seriously, pour a kettle of really hot water over the ding, let it dry then put the tape on and that will waterproof the ding and be a 'scar' to remember !) 8)

I would try and fix it yourself with a kit. I have just dinged my board and fixed it using ding all, works really well. That ding doesnt look that bad.

I would never smear solarez over glass, it gets very messy because it is itself filled with glass fibre so doesn't spread evenly. Only use it to fill small holes.

Buy a suncure poly ding repair kit, give the area a heavy sand and then patch over with fibreglass cloth. I would recommend is buying a bottle of acetone and give the area a wipe before glassing.

Careful not to breath in any glass fibres or sanding residue, covering your mouth with a scarf will do but a dust mask is better.

Thanks everyone! If I wanted to add a little blue color, can I use mix in some blue paint or does it have to be a special type of pigment?

You can if youkknow a surf shop pick up a little pigment, but I wouldn't bother as so little is needed for a ding like that, you need a small glass patch and when your are done there will be only a little scar on the side of the board. if it is any where near where your legs hang then ensure your finish is smooth so you don't abrade yourself. get the ding all or a full ding kit, solarrez is an emergency kit. It's fun to do your own repairs heaps cheaper and you get better as you go, more surfing = more dings = more repairs= the better you get a fixing.

Major tip don't do it inside your house read instructions for clean up and safety, but have fun, do not be tempted to add extra hardener ( catalyst) fire hazard. mix hardener and resin really well and if in doubt do it little by little! It's how we all learnt :!:
