Which of these 2 leashes should i buy??

Postby vertigo911 » Sat Aug 18, 2012 1:22 pm

Hey everyone.
so, I'm an intermediate level surfer (more on the beginner side- I usually surf waist high waves, and no more then head high), and i want to buy a new leash for my board- one that will serve me with my current 6'3 fish or 6'0 short.

i heard that "Ocean & Earth" has a "ONE Piece Leash" series, so i thought i look into that, and i came across 2 options:

Ocean & Earth 6' Comp ONE Piece Leash:

Ocean & Earth Premium 6' ONE Piece Leash

the money difference isn't an issue here, but i need some explanations.
Coard Dia: 7mm - is it better then 6mm, or is it unnecessary for my type of waves, and will feel less comfortable (create more drag?)?

strap: is 50mm Padded better then 38mm Padded, or again, is it less comfortable but used for bigger waves?

maybe i should get something completely different all together?

THANKS ALLOT FOR HELPING :)

If you're surfing no more than head high, I'd go with the comp one, as it will cause (slightly) less drag

Hello vertigo911,
I also like comp leashes for smaller waves. Thicker leashes may be stronger but they also cause lots of drag. If you are surfing waist to head high waves, you really do not want to drag a long thick leash along with you. If however you have not learned to keep your board with you, then you may want to get a thicker diameter leash, for the safety of yourself and others.

Maybe I'm showing the conservatism that comes with old age, but I would suggest going with the thicker leash unless:

- you are totally confident that, if the leash breaks, you will have no difficulty swimming in even in bigger surf and with rips (the less confident you are, the more you need to rely on the leash);

- you don’t surf in a crowded area, where a loose board could cause others problems; and

- you don’t surf in an area where a loose board will end up smashed on rocks (rather than just end up on the beach).

All leashes can break, but the thinner the more likely it will break and the more likely one of the above situations may be relevant. That said, the difference between 7mm and 6mm is probably fairly minimal (both in terms of performance and drag); although you may find a 50mm ankle strap more comfortable.
