Is This Fixable?

Postby wormybear » Wed Jun 27, 2012 2:14 am

A lady wants to trade me this board and if It can be fixed I'll get it. I'm trying to get a ton of "dead" boards that to most people aren't worth anything and breath new life back into them. Once I get them back to life I have an idea to use them for charity. So, I don't care how tough a fix as long as it can be done. I know they're not the best pictures in the world. But if someone could maybe give me a yea or nay on it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Nay.
Chances are that board has been full of water - it's dead now and deserves to be left to rest in peace. Or pieces.

In my opinion, It would be easier to build a new board than to fix this one.

You could fix it, probably not the best to try and fix. The only real way would be to ram a load of putty filler into it and then sand it. It wont look nice, or perform well as it will be very nose heavy, but if its for charity then something is better than nothing. Is the only damage to the nose??

Great thoughts Wormy, it is probable a board in this state will cost you more to fix than it will be worth and initially not worth anything you might choose to trade.
Suggestion, if this is a project you really want to do, see if you can get local board shops and manufacturers on side for supplies etc.
Sometimes too if you have a really worthy project a service club like Rotary or Lions can help you get running on it.

A few Rotary Clubs in Australia rescue old bicycles and assemble them into wheelchairs and send them off to third world countries.
A lot of traveling surfers take an old board in their kit to third world surf spots and sort of release it to the local kids.
Have a good plan and people will help you! :D

Of course you can fix it but it all depends really on what you plan to use them for charity for. I doesn't look like it's worth anything to me, have you told the lady in question what your plans are re charity?
If your plan is to sell it on then i would say do not bother becasue as Matt says its probably full of water and you'll be selling on a dog of a board to someone and you don't want to be spending much money on it.
If however your plans are different and you can get the board for very little/free then just whack some filler in it, sand it back and see if it surfs.
But to be honest i think your time would be spend better looking for another board.

Thanks so much for the advice everyone. Obviouslly, I don't know as much as I could before undertaking something like this. But, I do have a fairly solid plan, a pretty decent mechanical aptitude, and the best intentions. So, I figure as long as my heart is in the right place and there's the will inside me I can't fail. Plus, I've always wanted to learn how to shape and do repairs. I'm going to make a post that outlines everything so everyone can see and maybe give me some advice. Look for it soon, it will be called Beach Bears for anyone interested.

Thanks for the links jaffa, some very useful information in them and I can't wait to read more. Last week I got two boards for a rod and reel, I hope they can be sweet rides soon. I'll post some pics later. One is a 5' 9" Erie Peeples that just has some dings it needs fixed and a 6' !0" Innerlight Surf Shop Brand that needs a couple fins and some light work done to it. Both came with leashes and traction pads so that's cool. I tried to make sure to hook the young guy up right for being a good kid: told me he had to fend people off all week for them. I can't wait to get them back in shape and hopefully bring someone someone joy who might not otherwise get to experience the beauty of nature and the ocean. Today's kids are going to be adults one day and I just hope that I can spark the love of nature in at least one kids heart. I have taken your advice and started networking as much as I can. I've got an artist buddy of mine to draw up a little girl bear and boy bear to use as my logo and t-shirt design. Oh yeah, I have two more questions before I go pick up the next patient. One, what is a boards value if it's broke in half, but can be fixed? And second, if a board has been broke but fixed but the nose has been broken and fixed poorly, what is it's value? Oh and what should I expect to spend on a good supply of repair materials? And are there any shapers in Pensacola who want an intern? I can do welding work for you to pay for teaching me. As always I look forward to seeing what useful knowledge you guys will lay on me next. I really hope I don't irritate anyone with my non-stop questions. I just really enjoy learnning as much as I can about stuff I'm into. I guess I'm a nerd. :blah:

New Idea: when you find one this beat up, turn it into a boogie or kneel board. You may find it possible to do this by cutting off a beat up nose or tail and using only the mid-section of the board.

Actually, I did get the board anyways and I'm not sure if the nose is cool to repair or not. I was actually looking at it a little earlier and was curious as to whether it could maybe still be used. I was thinking it would be cool to make a little board for a smaller kid out of it. It seems soild except for the first six inches of the nose. Can you chop off the nose and just give it a rounded nose? I need to put the dimensions up. By the way, where can I get bulk supplies online for cheap and what's the best source of instructional materials (I prefer books)? How can I tell who makes a board if I don't see any brand label or shaper's marks? Could they be under the traction pad? Or does the lack of marks mean it was factory made?

P.S. To Billie: Do you mind if I messaged you some pics and some questions I have? I didn't want to bombard you.

Wormy, it could be a homemade job but you can just cut off the rotten part of the nose and re-glass.
There was a shaper suggested to you who works nearby, often surf factories and bulk hardware stores have resin and hardener. Here in Australia there is occasionally room to have somebody who is planning the sort of charity aid you are thinking of,. Don't know about Florida though?

The way you are thinking of going is how many many shapers and surf workers started! :D
Most factory made(by that I think you mean pop outs often have labeling to try to seem cool to uninformed buyers).
Backyarders are the most likely logo or label free!
IMPORTANT , always wear a mask if working on the foam and if you are using any power tools to cut the fiberglass and resin, use eye protection, there are minute glass fibers going everywhere, take adequate care, the substances in surfboards are not kind to human health!

wormybear,
Sure. Forward some photos of board projects. The way I see it, you have the opportunity to learn about using fiberglass and make something useful for less fortunate recipients. Most everyone that participates regularly in this forum recognizes that the boards you make don't have to be perfect or contoured for intermediate or better surfers.

Wormy keep your eye on this thread as it looks like some repair knowledge is going to be floating between these two threads :D

As the French would almost say "resin d'etre" and it would seem almost rational :D
