What size Channel Island Flyer should I buy?

Postby formanproject » Tue Mar 06, 2012 5:32 pm

Hello,

I was thinking of purchasing a Channel Island Flyer recently, but not sure what size I should get. I'm 5'8 and about 140ish pounds, choosing between the 5'10" and the 6'. Anyone here ridden the flyer that could give me some advice?

Thanks a lot!

I have ridden a 6'1" Flyer and loved it. It is not just your weight that determines the size you should look for. Your surfing ability has a lot to do with how short of a board you can or should ride. What size board do you ride now? The best thing to do if possible is try out a couple boards and see what works better for you. If you have a surf shop nearby check the used rack and see if they will allow you to rent or demo a couple boards. Channel Islands recommends the flyer be ridden 2” to 3” shorter and 1/4” to 1/2” wider than your normal shortboard. Hope that helps!

Thanks,

The reason I ask is because I found a very good deal for one that is 275, but it might go fast. Right now I'm riding a 6'6 Fish, as well as a 7'10 Funboard and a 9'0 Longboard but am looking for something a bit more responsive. I have yet to ride a real shortboard so i'm not exactly sure what the smaller than your average shortboard would entail.

Would the difference between a 5'10 and 6'0 be enough to make me regret my decision, as well as possibly spend an extra 400$?
