Re-learn or buy new?

Hey guys,
I know there are a few threads out there about this, but I didn't want to threadjack anyone when their situation isn't just like mine. Hopefully, if I get a response here, it'll help me out and some other folks can benefit, too.
I said in my first-post intro that I've surfed before, but that was a long time ago. So, getting back into it (and recently having major life changes like..oh...buying a house) and being budget minded, I want to get it as 'right' as possible without investing a thousand bucks trying to fine tune my choice. I'm 30, 5'8", about 140 lbs (so, skinny), and pretty fitness-minded. I've been swimming in open water since I was 4 (I've taught swimming and lifesaving), and I've grown up boating and snorkeling in the gulf (point - I'm comfortable and safe as I can be in the water. But, not invincible).
Here's the reason for the background - when I learned to surf (at age...12/13?) I learned on a 6'6" board that I still have. Haven't touched it since. I posted a picture in the general chat and there's a link to it on the quiver page. Back then, it was giant for me. Now, it's not as giant, but it's still over a foot longer than I am. I've read a lot of the "newbie surfer" material here, and I've come to the conclusion that either I should just go with the board I have because of the difference in my height and board length, or I should get like a 7'6" funboard to 're-learn' on.
Quick piece of relevant informaiton - I live on the gulf coast in north florida, so the waves here aren't exactly what you'd call monstrous, and it's basically all shore break. This is what tells me getting another board might be the better idea (I'd be happy to be wrong and save the cash), but since I'm just getting into it (again), I don't specifically know what my board is 'for.' Any of that make sense?
Opinions, flames, and .gifs that point and laugh at me are always welcome. Thanks!
-X.
