Water logged board? Cracking noises?

Postby JakeYllander » Wed Feb 22, 2012 3:49 pm

I just bought a used board from a store and I don't know how to tell if the board is letting water in or not. When I push my board completely under water it makes light "crackly" noises. Does that mean the boards logged, or is that normal? HELP PLEASE

Hi JakeYllander, welcome to Surfing Waves!
You'll normally see some discolouration if the board has been letting in water. Remove all the wax and grime from the board, then give it a really close inspection. Look for dings, cracks or anything abnormal.

There are some tiny dings, no cracks, no discoloration, I'm just conserned about the sound my board makes when its pushed into the water fully, it makes a cracking noise almost?

Well I've never noticed a cracking noise of any sort with a surfboard (other than when I actually snapped one). I'm not sure what to suggest. Perhaps someone else has come across this before.
Very thinly glassed board? / Internal hidden damage?

yikes, it surfs fine though haha? It's very soft noise haha, it might just be the pressure on the board.

Out of the water, get the board and (gently) bend/twist/manipulate the board. Gently. See if you can recreate the noise. That may give you a better idea of the source.

When you push your board underwater, the load transfer of your body weight is through your hands. Check that out... you might be gripping the rails too tightly and bending the glass. push the glass with your finger and see how sturdy it is.

hope that helped :)
aloha!
