Surfing Waves

Hey, I'm new here but was hoping someone could help me out with a bit of advice

I just got this 6"10 fish from a friend but its got a little bit of damage to the tail. I don't know too much about this as previously borrowed friends boards or rented which have usually been pretty beaten up already. So I hope you can see the extent of the damage from the pics and I was wondering how bad this is eg. is it still ridable, quick repair job or take for a pro repair? What my options?

The rest of the boards fine, its just on the corners of the tail

I would get it fixed before taking it into the water. Surfboard dings that are through the fiberglass will suck in water and eventually deteriorate the foam and mess your board up. They are not that hard to fix yourself, but if you have no experience you can take it to a professional. I would get a quote before having it fixed so there are no surprises. If you decide to do it yourself and you mess it up, you can always sand off your repair and re do it.

Thanks for the reply Tony, great help. So if i'm going to need to repair it think I'll look into doing it myself. It seems like a pretty small scrap but Ye was worried it may let water in. I'll give it,a search, sure there's plenty of tips, thanks

Looking at the cjips, they don't seem major. Solarflex, or some other form of epoxy that hardens in sunlight is the best option. if you give the dings a sanding so it opens up a small hole, give it a good blow to get all of the dust out, and the put plenty of solarflex (i do think its called that but then again i could be making things up) in and on the ding. let it dry in the sunlight and then sand it off so its nice and smoothe. ive had a few dings on my board, including one where i dropped it sideways off of my car roof onto a gravel/stone carpark. it didnt look pretty but i just did as i mentiond and its a pucker job!!

I think Toj is repeating himself but the product is called Solar Rez. In most countries, but don't get the epoxy without checking, your board seems th be normal construction and epoxy on normal board and standard resin on epoxy boards usually fails to bond.
it is well worth the check and it is quite an easy first repair

If the ding was anywhere but the tail prongs, I would second using solarez or a similar UV-curing resin+fibre solution. However, if you want to stand your surfboard up on the tail then you will need a repair that will take some weight. The solarez or whatever you fill the holes with will eventually come loose, I have seen this happen on my friends boards and on one of my boards when I bought it.

You should buy a ding repair kit that comes with some fibreglass cloth. Fill the hole with resin + microballs, and then laminate over with 2-3 layers of fibreglass with an inch overlap on the outer layer. I would recommend a UV curing ding repair kit as you can do it indoors which gives you essentially an infinite time to spread the resin round and get the cloth flat before you cure it.


TL/DR Use a ding repair kit, not solarez
