opinions on beginner board please?

Postby sarahjayne » Sun Aug 21, 2011 9:20 pm

Hi, after reading countless topics like this, apologies to anyone thinking 'not another one!' but any help would be very much appreciated!

I'm still a newbie to the sport and living in England i cant see myself being a pro anytime soon  lol so i'm looking at getting a funboard.. i'm 5'6 tall and 130lb and looking into getting an NSP funboard/surf betty, i'm just unsure which size to go for. A friend of mine (doesn't live nearby so can't just pop down and try it out) is selling an NSP 6'8 funboard and i can get it at a pretty good price, would that be suitable for me? As it says on the GSI website that this size "will offer a stable platform for beginning surfers as well as a rounded pintail that will hold in overhead surf. With this shape you have all your bases covered" - is that actually true or will it be way too small for me? I've just learnt to ride the white water comfortably (on a friends bic 7'9) and looking to eventually progress but don't get to the waves that often, and even when i do they aren't always great! So i don't wanna spend a fair bit of money on a board that when i do get to use, isn't gonna be any fun and won't catch anything (it's 21" wide and 2 7/8 thick if that helps?!) and stop me advancing. If the 6'8 is no good, would i be better off going for the 7'2 or 7'6? Is there really a lot of difference in those 4 inches?

Sorry for the essay, it's so hard trying to find an answer already posted online as everybody is posting dif height, weight etc so figured you guys may be able to give me a pretty good answer :) Thanks in advance!

A 6'8 board would be fine at your height/weight, but if you're only going to get to the water once in a while, then you'll find that you'll spend the whole time re-learning what you could do last time.
The 7'2 might be a better bet - and yes, 4 inches will make a huge difference! :D

At 5'6, I think the 7'6 might be a bit too bulky for you.
Good luck with it.

Ah thanks for the advice! Would that not be the case with any size board tho - the starting over again if i don't go too regularly?
Found a place in cornwall that hires those specific boards out so hoping to get down there for a week in the next few months and test the 6'8 and 7'2 out and see how i go on! :D

id say, 6.8 should be fine... considering the hight and weight, a 7.2 might be a bit too big...

i have a friend, which has about the same mesurements as you, and she sais, 6.8 is the longest she can ride...
everything else is too bulky, realy hard to turn etc...
