Surfing Waves

I have grand cherokee and need to carry 2 surfboards and drive on major highways. are there any roof racks that are reliable?

i am in a simular position, can any tell me if its smart to make one homemade.. or if i should just buy it.

i use a soft rack on my little ford escort sedan, don't know if that would work for you. it holds up on highways just fine. if i get to over 70mph or so it starts to wobble a bit, but never had any trouble with it. you can get em pretty cheap on ebay as well. like half what the stores charge.

does you jeep have a luggage rack? If so, strap two pads on, get some tie downs and you'll be good to go. I have a Thule rack- same concept but my car didn't come with a luggage rack. It works great, I travel on the highway all the time and I have no problems. Sometimes I'll drive >3 hours at 80+mph and everything works fine-board is secure and doesn't move at all. As far as the Thule "surfboard rack" or whatever they are calling it, I'd stay away from it and get some pads and straps.

As far as this "stacker" thing from ohana, it's a new product he/she is hyping on all the message boards- I don't know anything about it, other than if you only have one board, or a board bag, or an old towel, you probably won't need it, but who knows.

I use the ones made for the car by Toyota, with some pipe insulation and strap them down. Been up to 80 on the motorway and they don't move at all.
