First of all, can you surf or are you learning? If you're learning, a shortboard is gonna be tough... and REALLY frustrating if you don't have great waves. Being over 6' like myself, reaching your leg up to the rear of the board in the stance motion can really give you drag on a shortboard and you can lose the wave entirely until you get good at popping up. I'd suggest 7' or more, but I myself learned on a 6'0 and I'm 6'3. It wasn't always fun, but I like a challenge. Anyhow, look for a funshape, preferably something with a rounded nose and wider than 20''. That will at least give you some platform to float/stand on.
