Can someone please tell me what the soft tubing is that you can put on your roof bars as padding. Call me tight but I don't really want to spend £30 on some tubes with a brand name printed on them. Im sure I can pick up some cheap tubes if I knew what I was looking for.

Thick foam pipe lagging does the job best. Just get a length and chop it to size.

That's right. Most of us use pipe insulation. In the US, there are 3 outer diameters regularly available at hardware stores. The inner diameter is the same and, fortunately, equals the outer diameter of most roof rack cross members. It's available with and without a slit along its length. It costs about 80 cents for 6 feet. You can use talcum or baby powder for lubrication when sliding non-slit insulation onto the rack cross member.

if you google Climaflex you might be able to buy the right size locally - I use really fat Thule bars as the usual plumber sizes is too small, £3 or £4 for a couple of metres

Scaffold companies also use good stuff, but its often bright yellow and a bit big
