Yet another which board question!

Been surfing rental softboards and bic 7'9 mini mals for a bit I can pop up on unbroken waves and i'm trying basic turns but i'm struggling to turn the mini mals.

I've had to stick with rentals til now due to no transport but i've just got a car so i'm looking to buy a board so I can get surfing more often.

I was looking at saving some more cash and buying a custom 7'2 mini mal but there's a 2nd hand fat boy flyer advertised locally that i'm tempted to buy if it would be suitable for me.

The dimensions of the flyer are 7'2 x 21 x 2 7/8"

I'm 5'8 and 9 stone.

Would the flyer be a good choice or should I wait till i've got the cash to get the mini mal!

A much better 'which board' question than normal

If you can ride unbroken waves on a mini-mal, then it might be time to step up to a more performance board anyway. That flyer has got masses of volume, so may well be perfect as your first real board.
Whatever board you buy next is likely to be a transition board (assuming you're aiming at shortboards in the long run) so probably not worth spending money on a custom until you know a bit more about what you want. Going for a cheap second hand board is usually a good move at the stage you're at.

I'd go the Flyer as a transition board, it would have the volume for continuing your learning curve and have better performance aspects.
I'm not a great fan of mini mals as there are similar size higher performance boards that start your next stage of evolution. IMO A good second hand is a great way to go :!:

Thanks for the replies :D

I thought the dimensions and volume of the flyer might be ok for me but I didn't want to rush in and buy something without asking advice first then find i'd bought something too advanced for my surfing level and should have went for the mini mal!

I'm going to see the Flyer tomorrow! :D
