just wondering, how often do you apply sunscreen when you're out? i usually apply when i'm suiting up, so the sunscreen has some time to sink in. if i'm out for 2-3 hours, should i be reapplying? also, what's the best brand to use? do you use anything different on your lips?

I just put it up half an hour before I go outside. Only when you feel you need more sunscreen than you should put on more. Well actually every brand is oke, even the cheap ones, I would say if you buy a cheap one it is as good as the expensive one...
On my lips? I don't use anything on my lips, but what you could use is apply some vaseline, but not too thick!!

Good Luck,

I am the whitest mofo you will ever meet, the only dark bits on my skin are freckles. I apply before i go out and often surf three hour sessions. While i never get burned i do get a little bit pink after and my freckles go nuts. Most decent sunscreens should last that long but in order to avoid long term sun damage you may need something more.

I have heard it is good to re apply often. I have also heard and seen a lot of surfers do not rub the sun screen or zink oxide in all the way so you get a little more protection. If my nose has been burned a lot I will put zink oxide on it before surfing and leave my nose a little white to help protect my nose from burning more. I also like Aloe Gator SPF 40 water proof sun block, but it works best in my opinion if you re apply at least every couple hours.

"if you buy a cheap one it is as good as the expensive one..."

I have used "cheap" sunscreens & they don't work as well, they often sting the eyes, are not waterproof & end up more costly because they don't work.

My favorite brand is Zinka, the Nosecoat/Sunblock has saved many surfing vacations for me.
