Leash twists on itself

I have a leash which wasn't being used for a long time, was coiled in my board bag for about 3 years which I'm guessing is causing my issues, and now it loves to twist around itself in the water (basically wraps around itself and doubles in thickness if you get what I'm saying). What I'm wondering is, how can i get it to stop from doing this. Would a good ol stretch out of the water do it any good or do you guys have any better suggestions?
Peace

Leashes dont cost much. New one.
If its been sitting there for 3 years, its probably perished anyway.

What about attaching it to a beam and hanging a weight at the other end on a warm day and let it straighten itself out?

Bucket of hot water, not boiling but good and hot. Leave it in there 5 mins then hang it up so it can fully stretch out. Always try and keep your leash straight after a surf or it will just curl up again.

Thanks surfordie and surfnoob. I like the idea of combining the two.
@drowning, i would take the simple route but it's a pretty nice leash

I just hadn't been using it because it was attached to a board that i haven't using for a long time either so i just kinda forgot about it.
